It would even be great if you had the skills to make your own survival food out of the few things you have left.

Many of us will likely experience some disaster that will cut us off for a few days or even a week or two. Wildfires, snowstorms, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, and tornadoes are realities we need to prepare for.

Let’s face it: buying emergency preparedness food kits can be expensive. Many high-quality kits are available, but even 30-day food supplies can cost a small fortune.


If you’re willing to pay for the convenience, survival food kits are an excellent long-term food source. Under the right conditions, they can have a long shelf life of 25 years.


The best way is to make your own survival food supply. Here are the reasons:

  • You’ll learn helpful survival skills that you’ll never forget. Our ancestors made bread, salted fish, stored vegetables, and dried meat. Along with many other skills, it was all part of their daily lives. Why not pick up this life-saving knowledge for yourself?
  • Making your own emergency food supply is less expensive.
  • You have more options for storing your food. Depending on the food items, you could use airtight containers, Mylar bags, canning, or vacuum sealing. When dehydrated or freeze-dried, some items will handle storage for longer times.
  • The best survival food is more than a source of calories. We need protein, vitamins, minerals, omega-3 fats, and other nutrients to maintain health. Your own prepared food has better nutrition than prepackaged kits.
  • Canned or processed foods from the grocery store come with built-in problems. They often contain high levels of salt, sugar, high fructose corn syrup, and chemical preservatives. Our ancestors sometimes used salt or sugar to preserve food but removed excess amounts before eating.

What Kinds of Survival Foods Can I Make?

This is where it gets interesting. People have survived on many of these foods for millennia. That means they’re time-tested and proven successful.


Here are a few examples:

  • Pemmican. The Plains Indians invented this nutrient-complete food to preserve buffalo meat for a long time. Once the early trappers and explorers discovered it, it was in high demand. This is still a staple for long-term food storage at room temperature.
  • Amish Poor Man’s Steak. This is a delicious way to can meat and gravy. It sure beats the macaroni and cheese you find in the survival kits!
  • Biltong and Jerky. Two different ways to make delicious dried meat.
  • Aarul. The superfood that helped the Mongols ride to the gates of Vienna.
