Indoor Aquaponics Kits: The Best 5 for Beginners

Two Gray Fish Staring At The Camera.

If you’re short on space or don’t like digging in the dirt, an indoor aquaponics kit could be an enjoyable solution. Aquaponics systems use fish and plants so they help each other. The $5 scientific term for that is “symbiotic relationship.”

These systems have one or more fish in a tank or pond. Large systems use food fish to double-harvest plants and fish.

Beneficial bacteria convert the waste matter from the fish into nutrients for the plants. A pump delivers the nutrient-rich water to the plants.

The plants are above the tank and in a grow media of pebbles or perlite. Some aquaponic systems don’t need a pump because the plants’ roots are in the water tank. In a well-designed system, the plants filter and clean the water. That way, the fish benefit from improved water quality.

Would you like to know more about aquaponics?  The Aquaponics Journal has a variety of free, interesting articles on the subject.

Since so many kits are available, the list below should help you decide. Most of these are small indoor setups, so they’re perfect aquaponics starter kits for beginners.

Bob Styer

As a child, I hated gardening. That was mainly because Dad expected us to work in the garden every so often even though we thought play was more important. Over the years, though, I've developed a real appreciation for growing things. Whether you're growing plants for food or to enjoy their beauty, gardening can make your life better. Seize the moment!
